A Little About Me...

Birthday:
I've had a few.  Let's just say, I'm past 40.  OK, over half way to that next milestone.  Why are you torturing me?!?!?!

Born Where:
Birmingham.....

Education: Not enough....but no time for more right now!!! My brain is too busy juggling my kids' extensive extracurricular schedules, their school work, etc.  No room left!!!  (Spring Hill College....degree in Communications & Political Science.....)

What would be your dream interview?

OK....let's clarify the question.   Dream interview....is that someone dreamy?  Or an interview that's got to have some substance to it?   Obviously, my answer would vary, depending!  Dreamy.....Hmm.  Thinking, thinking.   Someone "classic", like Harrison Ford?  Or fun like Owen Wilson?  As for substance.....Condelezza Rice---a woman of power, very intelligent and talented, and from Alabama.   (I just couldn't ask her about football...I'm clueless!)

What's your favorite thing about working at Sunny 98.5?

I get to talk without interruption (for the most part).  That never happens at home.

Who was on your school lunch box?

No lunch box....just paper bags.   With cold pizza and warm soda.  Yeah, I got an early start on good nutrition......

Do you have a nickname and if so, what does it say about you?
My father used to call me PoodleSqueak. I do not know why, other than he liked to embarrass me by calling me that in public places.   Most people had forgotten about that....thanks for bringing it up.

What's the one thing you can't live without?
Coffee.  Lots of it, and Diet Coke too.   If you took a blood sample, it would be at least 50% caffeine.   Hey, there's caffeine in chocolate, too, right?  OK, add that to the "gotta have" list...

What's your pet peeve?
People who don't read memos.  Or emails.  (And kids who don't read directions on their tests, but that's another subject that my kids would rather I not delve into).

What's your favorite local hangout?

Oh, yeah, like I have a social life!!!   I guess you could say I hang out at the grocery store, church, and the ball park.  Mom stuff!  And we eat out a lot.....at Moe's,  Beef O'Bradys, Boatyard......just to name a few.   (The rest we just get take-out from!  I rarely cook....and my kids appreciate that).

Do you have a life motto or creed?
Probably to say something encouraging to as many people as you can......you'd be amazed the difference it can make in their outlook....and yours.

What's your most embarassing moment?

? I have to pick ONE? Ok, how about the time I was so tired that I stuck the pacifier in my husband's mouth instead of the baby's? Or the time I was so tired that I accidentally fed my baby salsa instead of baby squash and he barfed all over the table in the restaurant (which shall remain nameless and from which I am currently barred).

Who would you most like to have as a dinner guest?

(assuming it's a catered dinner, because I wouldn't want to subject anyone to MY cooking) I used to say Katie Couric from the Today Show, but I really think I'd like to have Ann Curry over for dinner.   (And if Al Roker doesn't mind cooking, he can come too!) While we're talking, since seeing that photo of Matt Lauer at the beach, he's definitely included in the invite.   And my son wants me to add that any baseball players are always welcome....though my daughter may feel a little left out of the conversation.

What Sunny artist would you most like to have as a dinner guest?

(My daughter would like to answer this one for me; she wants Maroon 5 and Nickelback)
I'd like to ask Faith Hill how she juggles career and kids and still looks so perfect (and I saw her at Bellingrath when she did "Good Morning America"....even rehearsing at 5:30am she looked great! Sounded good too!)

What's your favorite snack?

Haagen Daz Rum Raisin....it's responsible for most of the weight I gained in college. Widemires Old Dutch Ice Cream is responsible for the rest.  Freshman 15?  I think it was a bit more than that!

What's always in your fridge?

Leftovers that no one wants to eat.   Except on garbage day, when I throw all that stuff out.  Then it's empty.

What food won't you eat?

Don't shoot me....I know I live on the Gulf Coast.....but I just can't eat fish.

What's your guilty pleasure?

Reading.  I just don't have any time!!!  I'm one book behind in the Left Behind series, and I've started a parenting book, and Stephen King (and Stewart O'Nan's) book on the Boston Red Sox winning season ("Faithful").....Actually, I think I have about 6 books I've started....I just haven't had time to FINISH any of them!!  (Update:  still not finished with any of them, though I did make it through the Sexiest Bachelors issue of People magazine....that counts as reading, right?)

How do you spend your spare time?
I sleep.  Whenever I possibly can.  Because with kids, housework, etc, I never seem to get more than 6 hours sleep at night.   Got an extra 20 minutes?  I'm snoozing.  And you thought the life of a radio announcer was exciting, non-stop action, didn't you?!

Do you have any trophies or prized possessions?

No trophies....but I do have a T-shirt from the Monkees reunion tour and ticket stubs from Garth Brooks private concert in Mobile (and yes, I begged on air to get those tickets...it was awesome!)

What's the most embarrassing CD/Album in your collection?

I think we got rid of the disco stuff years ago, so we should be embarrassment-free.....but no, you can't peek.

What's your favorite article of clothing?

A blue jean skort my daughter talked me into buying.  And an old Faith Hill tour t-shirt.  (Some men from a nearby church were canvassing the neighborhood one day....I answered the door and one said, "I see you're already a believer, which church do you go to?"   Took me a minute to realize he was talking about my shirt, emblazoned with "Faith" on the front!  I explained,  and also told him where we go to church.)

What movie would you like to have been in?

Raising Arizona. Some great lines in that one.....like "he's gotta have his DP-Tet"....well, you had to see it.....
And I would have liked to have been in "Mr. 3000", since I spent almost 12 hours shooting scenes as an extra.  Everything I did ended up on the cutting room floor....

If you could be any movie/TV/book character, who would you be?

Sandra Bullock's character in "Speed"...the scene at the end when Keanu Reeves stays behind with her on the subway train that's about to crash.  THE most romantic scene ever.

If you were stranded on an island with the proper accessories, what 3 movies and TV shows would you want to be with you?
That's tough.  If it's TV shows, can I have the DVD collections?   "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Monk"....and my new favorites, "Psych" and "Numbers".    Movies....hmmm..."My Cousin Vinny", the version they show on cable, with the language bleeped out.

Who are your favorite three actors? actresses?

Ok, actors.....romantic or comic?   Harrison Ford (he's both).  Tony Shaloub.  All the guys on "Numbers" (CBS).
Actresses..... why is this so tough??? I think it's because there are so many....I'd really have to walk down the aisles of a video store to figure this one out. Here's a few that come to mind....Sandra Bullock.....Meg Ryan....Maggie Smith or Judi Dench....

If you could be any age again, what would it be?

Again with the age thing. I've already admitted being over 40, (technically over half way to that other number),  what more do you want from me?!?! Actually, I don't want to go back in time...I was geeky as a kid. At least now I fit comfortably into the Mom mold.

What do you like to do on vacation?

Relax. Though it's rarely what we end up doing. Instead we drive hundreds of miles, spend lots of money, go lots of places that we can only remember when we develop the film....and we're beat when we get home. There's got to be a better way....

Is there anything else we don't know about you?

Hmmm.....well, I like to sing. Loud. They used to let me sing in the choir at church; now I just sing from the back row of church.   So far, no major complaints.. and no one seems to be switching seats.  Around the radio station they request that I stay in the sound-proofed areas if I'm gonna sing.

Kids and Icky Germs
Monday 10-06-2008 9:34am CT
Couple of stories about kids and germs today....

The first is another reason to make sure your kids get their flu shots.   Last year, more kids, ages 5 to 17, died from the flu.  These were kids who had been healthy until they got the flu.

Public health officials have changed their recommendations for kids and the flu shot.  They used to recommend shots for children under age 5.... now they recommend that ALL children, age 6 months to 18 years, get routine flu shots.

Find out more HERE.

Now, here's where I disappoint kids even more, by taking away their favorite pets.

Doctors are warning against certain types of pets for children younger than 5.....because of the risks of disease, such as salmonella.

What kind of pets?  Hamsters, baby chicks, lizards, and turtles.

You should also avoid them at petting zoos.

Men May Not ASK for Directions, But They'll Probably Want to At Least HEAR Them
Thursday 10-02-2008 11:26am CT
How do you get a guy to buy your GPS system over the next brand?  A little sex appeal.  TomTom GPS had added another celebrity voice..their first female voice--- "Sex and the City" actress Kim Cattrall.

Instead of just "turn left at 2.4 miles" or other straightforward directions, you'll hear Kim ("Samantha") cooing things like "This is the city, darling.  Anything goes."

TomTom says Cattrall brings out the lighter side of navigation.  Kim says she's thrilled to make trips more fun and exciting.

Of course, there's an extra cost.....$12.95 to download.

And if she's not your cup of tea, other celeb voices are available....including Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper, Curt Schilling....and for those who need someone to be more forceful about directions... Mr. T!   (So what does he say?   I pity the fool who doesn't turn left?  I dunno!)

Sleepy Teachers....
Thursday 10-02-2008 11:25am CT
We've heard for years that kids aren't getting enough sleep.  And that makes it difficult for them to learn ....and even behave... in class.   But while researching kids and sleep, and its effect on the classroom, researchers at Ball State realized something else that was having a major impact........the teachers were sleepy, too.

They studied teachers as well....and found about half of them admit to missing work or making errors due to a serious lack of sleep.

Why aren't they getting sleep?  Well, aside from the fact that they're like the rest of us, having to balance work and family.....they also have papers to grade, lesson plans, etc to do at home....and many of them are moonlighting----working second jobs at night.

Gulf Coast Connection to the Movie "Fireproof"....plus, NO KISSING!
Monday 09-29-2008 10:37am CT
"Fireproof" debuted at #4 over the weekend.  That's impressive, because the Christian drama opened in just 839 theaters.   It stars Kirk Cameron as a man trying to save his marriage.  He plays opposite Erin Bethea, who graduated from the University of Mobile.

Find out more about Erin (who also had a small part in "Facing the Giants", by the same producers), by clicking
HERE.

And find out more about "Fireproof" by clicking HERE.

By the way, the script called for Kirk Cameron to kiss his "wife" in the movie....but Cameron won't kiss anyone but his real wife....find out how they worked around that, from MSNBC.
Women Rule in the Home?
Thursday 09-25-2008 10:03am CT
A USA TODAY article today, "Women Rule the Roost," raises a few questions.  Who's making the decisions in your household?

A Pew Research project found women are calling the shots in 43% of households.....and share decision-making in 31%.  (That means it's the guys calling the shots, by themselves, in 26% of households).

And the decisions range from what to watch on TV......to what to do this weekend.....to major purchases for the home.

Researchers said a significant number of men are just "bystanders" in the home.

Does that bother anyone else, or is it just me?  While it's nice that women are getting more say in things these days, it also looks like the guys are shirking their responsibilities.  "Yes dear" may mean fewer fights, but it also means they're not contributing to the household like they should.
